With summer right around the corner, I find myself wanting to freshen up my home with a relaxed summery feel, don’t you? I think feeling like we’re on vacay while still at home is the ultimate luxury. And for me, that usually means adding a subtle coastal vibe. We may not live at the beach all summer but we CAN create the ambience!
If you’re fortunate to live by the ocean then you probably already have a “coastal vibe” going on all around you. But if you’re like me and don’t live in a beachy locale, we have to get a little more creative when trying to add a summery feel to our homes, don’t we?
Today, I’m here to inspire you on how I add a subtle coastal vibe that looks great no matter where you live! You may think coastal elements can look out of place if you’re not in a beach house, but I beg to differ! I’m in Dallas, Texas and we’re about as landlocked as it comes. But I don’t let that stop me from adding the peaceful, calming coastal elements I love. Here are my 5 favorite ways to add a coastal vibe to YOUR home!
I think the foundation for ANY summer look is definitely going to be a lighter color palette. I have a personal obsession for white slip covered upholstery for a couple of reasons. First, it just creates the most calming and relaxing space. It’s the perfect neutral backdrop that you can keep subtle or add punches of color as I did in this pic from our upstairs bonus room. ALL of our major pieces of upholstery are white and have been for many years. We just simply do not get tired of it. I don’t like to commit to color or pattern on large, expensive pieces, but that’s just me!
Secondly, before you start telling me it’s completely unpractical for dogs and kids, hear me out. It’s totally WASHABLE! If I find a stain or spot on our sofas, I can just pull it off, add a little spot remover or bleach, throw it in the washer and voila! It comes out fresh and good as new. The same can not be said for furniture without the slip covers. I’m a HUGE fan for the washability factor.
Now, what do you do if you’re not in the market for a new sofa but want to lighten up your color scheme for the summer? If I were you, I would find an inexpensive drop cloth or white linen sheeting to create a flowy, slip covered look on the cheap. Or, I’ve actually had good luck with the pre-made slipcovers from SureFit. I think this is a genius way to transform your furniture for a seasonal look for not a ton of investment. Even just changing your sofa color would really go a long way to achieving the coastal summer vibe we’re after.
Also, we have found our relatively inexpensive pieces from Ikea to work really well for us. They’re probably not going to be family heirlooms but they can certainly give you the look for a lot less money then the higher end furniture stores. Just something to think about!
Sea Fan Art
Ok, full disclosure here. I make and sell Sea Fan art through my Etsy shop, Ocean Chic Boutique for 1 main reason. Because I LOVE IT! I began this journey because I wanted to create this gorgeous, coastal beauty for my own home. The obsession then turned into my small Etsy shop where I now create custom pieces for customers all over the country. But whether you get sea fans from me or somewhere else, they’re STILL one of my most favorite natural, coastal elements to add a luxurious, beachy feel to your home.
I think sea fans look amazing in bright, beachy colors or more neutral colors such as white and silver. I personally have created them in just about every color except black. If you’re interested in shopping my sea fans or would like to discuss a custom creation just for you, come visit my shop!
I find the sea fan art can be displayed beautifully in ANY style of home. They can fit into traditional, boho, and even modern looks. I created this custom set for a client’s very modern townhouse here in Dallas. Aren’t they lovely with her modern desert decor?

Shells, Faux Coral, Driftwood
I LOVE using elements from Mother Nature but especially during the summer. I collect shells, faux coral (not the real stuff!), driftwood, etc. These things are just so lovely and relaxing to me. Plus, if you do your own beach combing they can be had for FREE, or the cost of your vacation! I also love scouring thrift stores for nice old shells and antique pottery with shell or ocean motifs. Here are a few examples from my collection:
I also suggest to go scouting your nearest creek or lake for cool pieces of drift wood. I’ve found several pieces doing that. It may not be from the ocean but it’s still a cool natural element that can be displayed in a number of ways. Just make sure you let the wood dry out really well before bringing it into your home. You wouldn’t want any unwanted critters coming in uninvited! Let it dry out first.
Coastal Summer Vibe Table Setting Ideas
One of my favorite ways to bring in a peaceful, coastal look is through my table settings. I don’t entertain quite as much as I used to but I still find joy in setting a beautiful table. Summer is the perfect time to indulge your senses and spend a little more time on a lovely setting.
My formula for table setting is pretty easy. I always start with a base of white dinner plates and then add in the color through my glassware, or other salad plates and bowls I come across. Adding in the coastal elements comes from shells, sea urchins and coral. I also add in tropical looking flowers such as orchids or I’ve even cut a few elephant ears from my garden to add that coastal summer vibe.
My inspiration typically comes from one new piece and then I just start gathering things around my house to add to the look. I think of it as art and try not to take it too seriously. Just begin to add elements and colors that you find pleasing and it will come out gorgeous!
Setting a beautiful, coastal table doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Start with what you already have and then add in a few new pieces, a few shells, some tropical flowers (even cut from your own garden) and you’ll have the perfect relaxing summer look you’re after!
Natural Fiber Rugs and Accessories
Another major element in getting that coastal, summer vibe in your home is by adding in natural fibers and textures. Add in some jute, rattan, bamboo, sisal or seagrass. I’m a huge fan of seagrass area rugs and actually love them year round. They are extremely durable, stains come right up and they are typically pretty inexpensive as far as large area rugs go.
We have a large seagrass rug in our dining room and also in our living room. They bring in such a beautiful, relaxed texture. They also work well for layering. So if you want to layer other rugs on them in the fall and winter, they work beautifully for that.
I also like bringing in natural chunky fibers through grass woven baskets and mirrors. These can be found cheaply just about anywhere and really help create a relaxing feel.
So there you have it! I hope you’ve enjoyed my 5 Ways to Add a Coastal Summer Vibe to Your Home! Hopefully you can add a few of these elements to give your home that staycation feeling!
